1. Learning the concept of Tawhîd (absolute Oneness of God)

Islâm as the Religion of Truth (Qur’ân  61:9) is the only rational religion in the world.  It teaches Tawhîd ¾  the absolute oneness of God (2: 163, 5:73, 16:51 and 112:1-4).  The acquisition of true knowledge of Islâm is an obligation required for mankind to know and understand the concept of Tawhîd (absolute Oneness of God). In fact, the very divine Message that Allâh I wants mankind to understand is that He is One Allâh.  Allâh the Almighty tells us in the Qur’ân:

“Here is a Message for mankind: Let them take warning there from, and let them know that He is (no other than) One Allâh: Let men of understanding take heed.”    (14:52)

There are three categories of Tawhîd that we must understand.  First is Tawhîd Ar-Ruboobeeyah (i.e., Oneness of Allâh’s  Divinity, that is He is the Rabb (Cherisher and Sustainer), the Creator, the Sovereign, the Sustainer, the Provider, and Manager of the whole mankind in all affairs).  Second is Tawhîd Al-Ulooheeyah, which firmly states that  Allâh I  alone deserves to be worshipped).  Third is Tawhîd Al-Asmaa was Sifaat, declares that Allâh I  is the only One Who deserves the most Magnificent Names and Attributes).  The belief in Tawhîd (the absolute Oneness of God) in Islâm is the most logical idea that every rational individual could ever think of.  The reason: simply because, should there be two, three or more “gods” then, the entire universe would have been in chaos as a result of the competition of and struggle for power among “gods.”   Allâh the Exalted says:

“If there were, in the heavens and the earth, other gods besides Allâh, there would have been ruin in both!   But glory to Allâh, the Rabb of the Throne:  (High is He) above what they attribute to Him.”  (21: 22)

“No son did Allâh beget nor is there any god along with Him: (if there were many gods) behold each god would have taken away what he had created and some would have overcome over others! Glory to Allâh (He is free) from the (sort of) things they attribute to Him!”    (23:91)

The following are few examples of the many ayât (verses) in the Qur’ân that show how Allâh I  wants us to acquire knowledge and wisdom so we may know Him as the Only God, Who Alone We worship and Who deserves all Praise:

“Know they not that Allâh knows what they conceal and what they reveal?” (2:77)

“Know you not that to Allâh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth?  And besides Him you have neither patron nor helper.”    (2:107)

“...But fear Allâh and know that Allâh sees well what you do.”   (2:223)

“...And know that Allâh is free of all wants and worthy of all praise.”    (2:267)

“Know that Allâh gives life to the earth after its death! Already have We shown the Signs plainly to you that you may understand.”   (57:17)

If we study Allâh’s Book, we certainly learn the Truth that Allâh Alone is the Only God of all. The Qur’ân repeatedly tells us that there is no god but Allâh I.  Only Allâh I the Almighty claims for universal divinity.  He Alone commands mankind to know that there is no god but He. Allâh the Most High says:

“And your Allâh is one Allâh; there is no god but He Most Gracious Most Merciful.”    (2:163)

Allâh! There is no god but He (the) Rabb  (the Only Creator, Cherisher and Sustainer) of the Throne Supreme!”   (27:26)

Verily,  your Allâh is One, Rabb of the heavens and of the earth and all between them and Rabb of every point at the rising of the sun!”   (37:4-5)

Furthermore, the Qur’ân contains many praises to Allâh I  ¾  the Only One worthy of all praise (31:26). The most beautiful names or attributes belong to Him (7:180).  The following is one of the many ayât (verses) in the Qur’ân that shows glorification to Allâh the Almighty:

Allâh! There is no God but He the Living the Self-subsisting Eternal. No slumber can seize him nor sleep.  His are all things in the heavens and on earth.  Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permits?  He knows what (appears to His creatures as) before or after or behind them.  Nor shall they compass anything of His knowledge except as He wills.  His throne does extend over the heavens and the earth and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them.  For He is the Most High the Supreme (in glory).  (2:255)

The most important thing that we mankind should know is that Allâh I  is the Only One Who deserves our true worship. Allâh I  persistently claims for Divinity and commands us to serve or worship no one but Him. Allâh I  says in the Qur’ân:

“That is Allâh your Rabb (Only Creator, Cherisher and Sustainer)!  There is no god but He, the Creator of all things; then you worship Him: and He has power to dispose of all affairs.  No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision; He is Subtle well-aware.”   (6:102-103).

“Verily, I am Allâh: There is no god but I: so serve Me (only), and perform regular prayer for My remembrance.”    (20:14)

“. . . (This Qur’ân is)  the Book, with verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning) ¾  further explained in detail ¾  from One Who is Wise and Well-Acquainted (with all things).  (It teaches) that you should worship none but Allâh.”   (11:1-2)
